Thank you! And a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you too!

I am an anti-culturalist, my friend Maureen thinks that is not an accurate description, However ..
I think that December is spoken for by Santa and Christians. Just like there is a women's month and a black month and various and sundry other days, weeks and months spread over the calendar. Since it was the Christians who created the all-out extravaganza of cards and who incorporated into their celebration the various rituals of the cultures they had conquered, it seems only proper that December be for Christians. Everybody else wants on the band-wagon because they are greedy, so the Jews expanded a minor holiday, Chanakah to get better presents than the traditional dredle and a handful of peanuts. Blacks (hey my neighbor's prefer being called 'Negros' because of the era they grew up in so I compromise by keeping to the 70's term) then decided that many days of presents was preferable to one and boom, Kwanza was born.
My suggestion, is that rather than everyone jumping on the December bandwagon, we divey up the months and celebrate with each other during the other 11 months so that each group, including those who believe in nothing can have their own cards and day of gift exchanges.
If Christmas offends you, then associate only with people of your own persuasion and be tribal. But if you want to be inclusive (translation: truly greedy) celebrate each and every real or invented holiday with cards and presents, it will help the economy and not offend the Christians who if you remember conquered and converted and aren't above doing it again.
